‘SKY LEGACY’ CARE HOME DECLARED OPEN AT SLAF BASE KATUNAYAKE
The SLAF ceremonially declared open “Sky Legacy – We Care for You”, a dedicated care home for retired Air Force personnel, at Bandaranayake Watta, SLAF Base Katunayake today (22 March 2026), marking a significant milestone in line with the 75th Anniversary celebrations of the SLAF.
The occasion was graced by the 19th Commander of the Air Force and the High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to South Africa, His Excellency Air Chief Marshal Udeni Rajapaksa (Retd), as the Chief Guest. The event was also attended by the Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Bandu Edirisinghe, the Chairperson Seva Vanitha Unit, Mrs. Krishanthi Edirisinghe, the Chief of Staff, Air Vice Marshal Lasitha Sumanaweera, members of the Air Force Board of Management, senior officers, representatives of the Retired Air Force Officers’ Association (RAFOA), the Sri Lanka Ex-Servicemen’s Association (SLESA) and other distinguished invitees.
Addressing the gathering, Air Chief Marshal Udeni Rajapaksa (Retd) commended the SLAF for undertaking this meaningful initiative and emphasized the importance of caring for retired personnel who had dedicated their lives to the service of the nation.
Sky Legacy has been established with the objective of providing a secure and comfortable environment for retired Air Force personnel to spend their twilight years with dignity and care within the Air Force family. The project was initiated with the laying of the foundation stone on 30 September 2024 and has since progressed through several phases of development.
The design and construction of the facility were carried out by the Directorate of Construction Engineering, ensuring high standards of quality and functionality. The project was closely supervised and coordinated by the Directorate of Welfare.
The successful completion of the project was further supported through various welfare funds and fundraising initiatives, including raffle draws and contributions from the SLAF Seva Vanitha Unit.
During the event, the Commander of the Air Force presented a memento to the Chief Guest in appreciation of his presence. The President of the Sri Lanka Ex-Servicemen’s Association (SLESA), Air Vice Marshal Hemantha Soysa (Retd), also addressed the gathering and presented a memento to the Chief Guest to mark the occasion.
In addition, a generous contribution, was ceremonially handed over to the Commander of the Air Force by the Sri Lanka Ex-Servicemen’s Association as a gesture of support towards the welfare of Air Force veterans.
