SLAF, SLCOMM AND SLAF SEVA VANITHA UNIT CONDUCT MEDICAL OUTREACH PROGRAMME IN ANURADHAPURA
As part of the commemorative activities marking the 75th Anniversary of the SLAF, the Directorate of Health Services, in collaboration with the SLAF Seva Vanitha Unit and the Sri Lanka College of Military Medicine (SLCOMM), conducted a Medical Outreach Programme at Vijayaraja Maha Vidyalaya, Pihimbiyagollewa, Anuradhapura, today (07 June 2026).
The programme was organized to provide essential healthcare services to underserved rural communities in the area. The inauguration ceremony commenced under the patronage of Chairperson of the SLAF Seva Vanitha Unit, Mrs. Krishanthi Edirisinghe. Among those present were the Chief Incumbent of the village temple, Director General Health Services of the SLAF, Air Vice Marshal Lalith Jayaweera, Director General Health Services of the SL Navy, Surgeon Rear Admiral Janaka Marambe, Director General Health Services of the SL Army, Brigadier Upali Wijerathne, President of the Sri Lanka College of Military Medicine, Air Commodore Harsha Kariyapperuma, Base Commander of SLAF Base Anuradhapura, Air Commodore Pradeep Piyarathne, President of the Seva Vanitha Unit of SLAF Base Anuradhapura, Mrs. Amaya Wickramarathne, Principal of Vijayaraja Maha Vidyalaya, Mrs. Padmini Munasinghe, the Officer-in-Charge of Police, Pihimbiyagollewa and the Grama Niladhari of the division.
During the event, students of Vijayaraja Maha Vidyalaya presented several cultural performances. In addition, 150 selected students received gift packs consisting of school bags, shoes and educational materials. The SLAF Seva Vanitha Unit also donated 200 pairs of spectacles for distribution among members of the local community requiring vision support.
Furthermore, three custom-fabricated prosthetic limbs were donated to selected beneficiaries from the area with the sponsorship of doctors from the 6th Batch of the Colombo North Medical Faculty and the support of the Colombo Friends-in-Need Society.
The outreach programme provided a comprehensive range of healthcare services to approximately 1,200 community members. Services included outpatient consultations, specialist clinics in ophthalmology, general surgery, orthopaedics, internal medicine and obstetrics and gynaecology, as well as dental care, basic laboratory and diagnostic investigations, dispensing services, treatment facilities and referral arrangements for patients requiring secondary and tertiary care. Beneficiaries identified through visual screening were also provided with spectacles during the programme.
The clinic was conducted with the voluntary participation of consultants, medical and dental officers and healthcare professionals representing the Tri-Forces, coordinated through the Sri Lanka College of Military Medicine.
