Defence Services Games Closing Ceremony at Sugathadasa Stadium

The 7th Defence Services Games 2012 came to an exciting close, in a colourful ceremony last evening at the Sugathadasa Stadium last evening which saw the culmination of months of competitive sports where sportsmen and women of the tri-services pitting their talents against each other in 30 Competitive events and in 13 of the planned 17 Trial events.
In the competitive events the Sri Lanka Navy became champions in 15 events and joint-champions in 1 securing a total of 15.5 points whilst the Sri Lanka Air Force became champions in 8 events and joint-champions in 2 events securing a total of 9 points and the Sri Lanka Army became champions in 5 events and joint-champions in 1 securing a total of 5.5 points.
In the Trial events the order of merit was different with the Air Force becoming champions in 8 of the 13 events whilst the Army became champions in 3 and the Navy in 2.
Secretary to the President of Sri Lanka Mr. Lalith Weeratunga graced the occasion as the Chief Guest at the closing ceremony. Chief of Defence Staff Air Chief Marshal Roshan Goonetileke along with Army Commander Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya and Navy Commander Vice Admiral Somathilaka Dissanayake and Commander of the Air Force Air Marshal Harsha Abeywickrama were also present for the occasion. Also in attendance were high ranking officers and personnel of all ranks from all three forces.
The vibrant event which saw a few of the final athletic events taking place was also the scene of a few colourful displays. A free fall display by paratroopers of the tri-services took place immediately after this which included not only men but two female paratroopers of the Air Force. A 180 strong drum fusion comprising men and women of the tri-services playing Sri Lankan, Indian and African drums followed. After this the spectators were treated to a display of Taekwondo by members of the tri-services which was followed by a massed military band display. The evening's events came to a close with the chief guest Mr Lalith Weeratunga declaring the games closed and the National Anthem being sung.
