The Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) was announced the champions of the fifth Defence Services Games that concluded this evening (23 November 2009) at the Sugathadasa Stadium. The SLAF managed to secure the championship trophy marginally after having won equal amount of 1st place wins with the Sri Lanka Navy, but had the advantage of having two more 2nd place wins against the Navy who had nine of them. The Sri Lanka Army having achieved eight 1st place wins and seven 2nd place wins secured third place in the championship. Sportsmen and women of the Army Navy and Air Force competed for supremacy in twenty nine sporting disciplines, at this annually held event.

The champs received their trophy from Hon.Lalith Weerathunga, Secretary to HE the President, who was invited as the chief guest for the ceremony. The Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Air Force Air Chief Marshal Roshan Goonatilleke, the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General  Jagath  Jayasuriya and the host Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe  the Commander of the Navy were also present at the occasion.
